13 Jul Elkhart General Hospital Receives Bariatric Program Reaccreditation
Elkhart General Hospital has achieved Comprehensive Center accreditation on behalf of the American College of Surgeons for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accredited Quality Improvement Program, in partnership with the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
This accreditation, which Elkhart General first received in April 2015, formally acknowledges Elkhart General’s commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients.
To become an accredited program, Elkhart General demonstrated that its center meets the needs of patients by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, patient-centered care. This designation is based on the bariatric program’s quality of care, surgical cases, outcomes and other standards, following a rigorous, voluntary evaluation in April. During that site visit, an independent surgeon reviewed the program standards as well as policies and procedures.
The bariatric program, led by bariatric surgeons Eric Knapp, DO, and Luis Benavente, MD, has long been recognized as a regional leader in bariatric surgery and weight loss services. The program also has the only fellowship-trained surgeons in the region.
“This is a very good clinical program,” said Amir Heydari, MD, the Illinois-based independent surgeon who reviewed Elkhart General’s bariatric program for accreditation. “Their strength is in their people. The new operating rooms and recovery rooms are beautiful and the surgical staff members are extremely passionate and knowledgeable.”
